Over the summer I received items from a brand that had recently launched in Canada on Shoppers Drug Mart, ZERO by Skin Academy. I had not heard of this brand or it’s products before receiving them so I definitely was curious. I’m always up to try new skincare and have really made it my focus over the last few years to go for products that are designed to target my needs. Things I look for are hydration, fine line and wrinkle prevention, and overall youth maintaining ingredients. My skin type is normal to dry, with it leaning more dry in the winter months.
What’s intriguing about ZERO Skincare is their zero waste attitude. This is a 100% natural and vegan skincare brand with certified sustainably sourced botanical ingredients and eco-friendly packaging. They pride themselves on creating products that are not only safe for your skin but for the environment as well. The use sustainably sourced ingredients such as shea butter, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil to name a few.
Their packaging is recyclable or reusable. The cartons are recyclable as are the tubes. The lids of their glass jars are made of 100% bamboo which can be composted or you can just re-use the glass jars to hold small items such as earrings, rings, or if you’re like me you’ll use the jars to carry travel size amount products for trips. All of these sounds really good to me! So, what did I think of the products themselves?
Here’s what I received from the ZERO line and my thoughts on each product.
*Note: I received these items in PR.
An all-natural gel cleanser with a unique blend of Coconut Oil, Sweet Almond Oil and Sacha Inchi Seed Oil. This was probably my favourite item in the line. It has a very creamy consistency and was very gentle on my skin. It leaves my skin feeling clean with the oils helping to break down dirt and makeup from my face but also leaving it feeling soft. This feels very much like a higher end face wash I’ve used before like Origins but doesn’t have the irritating feeling I get with products like that around my eye.
This has a blend of Sacha Inchi Seed Oil, Sweet Almond Oil and Coconut Oil with finely ground apricot seeds help to smooth and brighten the complexion. According to ZERO this is gentle enough to use everyday. A lot of people and companies are moving away from using physical exfoliates as they can cause micro-tears in the skin so I was surprised to see this product. I personally have no issue using physical exfoliates but once I use up what I have in my stash I think I will move towards products with chemical exfoliates. The apricot seed is actually very fine like they say and not harsh on the skin compared to other similar products I’ve tried. I always ensure that I work up a good lather and water down products like this to keep them from being very scrubby on my skin. This is not something I would use everyday and I also only use products like this on areas that I find have the most build-up such as my nose. I think this is alright, it’s not something I would get again.
The creams are where ZERO starts to stand apart for me as all their creams are super nourishing and perfectly designed for dry skin! This cream’s key ingredients are shea butter and coconut oil. It is thick so a little goes a long way. The only downside is it does take some time to absorb into my skin so I find I have to massage it in or leave it on for a bit before I can move on to the next step in my skincare or makeup routine. It’s not something that bothers me now since I’m not wearing a lot of makeup during the day but I’m sure if I did wear makeup on top it would feel heavy.
Enriched with Shea Butter and Green Tea extract to soothe, restore and hydrate skin, for a refreshed and well-rested appearance in the morning. Again, another super thick product but I actually don’t mind this in a night cream. This will definitely come into good use over the winter months when my skin feels extra tight.
Enriched with Shea Butter, Sweet Almond Oil, Coconut Oil and other hydrating ingredients. I used this product a few times but not enough that I would give a well rounded review on it to be honest. Again, it has a thicker consistency which I think I will enjoy more in the winter, yet, it’s still a pretty thin and smooth product that I believe will still be delicate around the eyes. When I use this more I will try to provide an update on the blog.
Hand & Nail Cream
Enriched with Sweet Almond Oil, Coconut Oil, Sacha Inchi Seed Oil and Shea Butter (can you spot the trend here) this helps restore and heal dry hands. Now, if there is anything I love during the colder months is a good hand cream and this one is definitely hydrating. I use a little at a time and I found that it kept my hands feeling hydrated. I think this year my hands have been feeling especially dry with all the extra hand washing and sanitizer I’ve been using so I’m definitely really happy to have this!
I think this is generally a good skin care line. I like everything the brand stands for and that the ingredients are natural and vegan. However, I do like to have other active ingredients in my skin care such as retinol, hyaluronic acid, collagen, glycolic acid, vitamin C, etc. to ensure that I’m addressing my anti-aging concerns as well as hydrating my skin. So, likely I will be using these products along with other products I have rather than on it’s own. I think if you are looking for something hydrating, any of these items will be good for that. I highly recommend the face wash, night cream and hand cream!
Have you tried ZERO by Skin Academy? If so, what are your favourite products. Also, let me know what you like your skincare routine to do for you.
Lots of Love,
